Our Story - Remembering Lynn

Remembering Lynn Shriock

The following is a re-telling of the article that ran in the Dighton Herald in 2018, submitted by Logan Campbell

Who in this community can remember the smile Lynn Shriock always had on his face, donning his tape measure and plaid lumberjack hat at the lumberyard?

He lent a hand whenever it was needed and was a proud member of the local fire department. These are things our community will remember about Lynn. What a lot of people may not know about is the amazing gift Lynn left our community upon his passing…a gift that will have a long-lasting effect on the Lane County Community.

Lynn left his entire estate to the local fire departments of Lane County. His wishes were to ensure that there was always a means of funding above and beyond the department’s budget to provide firemen with the equipment and training to do the job safely.

The best vehicle for the money

Lynn’s gift brought the question of the best way to hold and dispense the money he had bequeathed. Logan Campbell and Harvey Strobel spearheaded a proposal to begin a community foundation. The process proved to be quite painstaking, and rightfully so. The county commissioners did their due diligence in ensuring that a community foundation was indeed the right direction to move.

501c3 Status

In the end, Lynn’s amazing gift has allowed this community to form its own local public foundation, the Lane County Community Foundation. The LCCF is a legal Kansas non-profit corporation and has received its 501c3 status from the IRS.

What does this mean for the community?

We now have a means to keep money local. If an individual or a business are going to have to pay Uncle Sam in the form of taxes, why not make a donation to your local community foundation, receive a tax deduction, and in return ensure those monies stay local?

Lynn’s gift

Lynn’s gift has enabled us to move from a sub-fund of the Scott Community Foundation to forming a community foundation of our very own. We are excited to begin to grow and improve our community and the lives of those within it. If you have more questions on how the LCCF operates, please don’t hesitate to contact us with those questions. We look forward to serving you!
